LIGHTSHIP HURON

This is the only lightship known in Michigan. Located near the Fort Gratiot Light. Picture taken July 4, 2008.

BRIEF HISTORY
The Fort Gratiot Light was built in 1825 and stands at 86 feet tall. The light is active and is occupied by the U.S. Coast Guard. Lightship Huron was anchored 6 miles from the St. Clair River entrance and was 3 miles from mainland. Lightships were used when Lighthouses, Shoals, and Reefs were to dangerous to build. Lightship Huron was retired from service in 1971.
